Asian Carp discovered close to Lake Michigan—Taking action

A commercial fisherman pulled a live Asian carp out of the Calumet River last week, just 9 miles away from Lake Michigan. While finding even one Asian carp is alarming, officials say that it does not mean the carp are reproducing near the lake, or in Lake Michigan itself. What is worrisome is that at the same time this carp was found, President Trump is proposing a federal budget that will cut funding for efforts to block Asian Carp and other invasive species from the world's largest body of fresh surface water. Meanwhile, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (Ohio) and Michigan’s two senators, Gary Peters and Debbie Stabenow, introduced a pair of bills on behalf of Ohio & Michigan fisheries: The Great Lakes Aquatic Connectivity and Infrastructure Program Act & The Great Lakes Mass Marking Program Act. The Great Lakes Aquatic Connectivity and Infrastructure Program Act calls for improvements to dams, culverts, roads, and other infrastructure. The Great Lakes Mass Marking Program Act calls for better monitoring of fish health by greatly expanding a pilot program the federal government began in 2010.
