We recently received good news to share from Washington regarding dredging and infrastructure funding for the Great Lakes in both the FY17 USACE final Workplan allocation and the FY18 President's Budget details.  For FY17, Great Lakes Navigation Operation and Maintenance (O&M) total is $154.5M, which includes $51.8M from the Additional Funds for Ongoing Work from the FY17 Appropriation.  FY17 President's Budget was $102.7M.

“Knowing the importance of this funding to our members, our industry and our state, we put this issue at the top of our list during our visit to 11 Congressional offices in Washington in May,” said MBIA’s Nicki Polan.  “We are very happy to see this support come through in the budget process and solute those who lobbied for it including Chuck May with the Small Harbor Coalition, MBIA member Jim Mrozinski of Onekama Marine, and many more.”  MBIA along with these other organizations, will continue to push for funding for our other harbors.

Key FY17 additions include 11 new dredging projects for a total of 30 in FY17, an additional 10 navigation structure repair projects ($31.5M), additional Lock repair projects ($3.7M for the Soo and  $2.3M for Chicago Lock), plus $4.4M in rock removal at Calumet to restore authorized depth. With these additions, backlog dredging will be reduced again this year and significant progress will be made in reducing the structure repair backlog. The FY18 President's Budget includes $106M for Great Lakes Navigation O&M.
