Nationally, tourism accounts for 9 percent of the world's gross domestic product, and it is no less significant in Michigan, maybe even more. Protection of the Great Lakes is not only important for the environment but it is also important to protect an incredible economic engine. Talk of cuts to the Great Lakes Restoration Fund, the EPA, and Sea Grant are all threats to tourism, boating and fishing industries.  Boating and fishing alone provide a $7.4 billion economic impact to the state of Michigan each year. These recreational past times are also important to the quality of life for the citizens in our Great Lakes State. MBIA along with many other organizations across the country have and will continue to express the need for support for protection for our Great Lakes and access to them.
