Letter to Associations on Commerical Credential Extensions

Dear Colleague,

Following a recent decision from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), commercial driver’s licenses, learner’s permits, medical certifications, and commercial endorsements expiring on or after March 1, 2020, will be extended through Dec. 31, 2020. Additionally, the FMCSA has waived the required 14-day waiting period for commercial learner’s permit (CLP) holders who must take their commercial driver’s license (CDL) skills test through Dec. 31, 2020.

While the extension from the FMCSA will be in place through the end of the year, it is of the utmost importance that commercial drivers who meet the criteria make an appointment at a Secretary of State branch office to renew their credentials as soon as possible.

Customers can reserve an advance or next-day appointment at any Secretary of State branch office online at Michigan.gov/SOS or by calling 888-SOS-MICH (767-6424).

For additional information concerning policies for commercial drivers during the coronavirus outbreak, we encourage you to visit the FMCSA website, www.FMCSA.DOT.gov.

Thank you.

Jocelyn Benson
