Progressive Metro Boat Show Canceled

July 27, 2020 – The Michigan Boating Industries Association announced the cancellation of the 2020 Progressive® Metro Boat Show due to increasing cases of COVID-19 in Michigan, and wide-spread reports of inventory challenges at dealerships. The show was scheduled for September 17-20, 2020 at the Lake St. Clair Metropark in Harrison Township.

“We’ve been watching the numbers along with Governor Whitmer and even though we are confident that our safety protocols at this outdoor retail experience could keep consumers and exhibitors safe, the fact that the numbers are going up again makes us pause,” said Show Advisory Committee Chair Pete Beauregard. “We want to support all efforts to stop this virus and we believe cancellation is the most prudent course of action for all our stakeholders.”

Demand continues and those who are interested in purchasing a boat should visit their local dealerships. “Boat sales and registrations have climbed to record levels this year, as people have figured out how to save their summer while complying with social distancing - by buying a boat,” said MBIA Executive Director and Show Manager Nicki Polan. “If consumers are in the market for a boat, it is time to check in with your local dealers. New shipments are coming in regularly and new orders continue to be placed for 2021 product.”

Grand Rapids based Statistical Surveys reports boat registrations across the country were up an impressive 20% from the year prior in June, showing personal watercraft and bowriders as leading categories of growth. Michigan was fourth in the country for growth and is the third largest marine market in the country with nearly 1 million registered boats on file, and a $7.8 billion annual economic impact.

MBIA is fully committed to the production of the 2021 Progressive® Metro Boat Show, scheduled for September 16-19, at the Metropark, and remains focused on the January Progressive® Detroit Boat Show and Progressive® Novi Boat Show in March. “With the guidance of our federal and state agencies, our team is working diligently to identify and implement all appropriate health and safety procedures for these future shows,” said Polan.

Michigan offers ample boating opportunities for boaters with the surrounding Great Lakes, more than 11,000 inland lakes, and 1,300 public access ramps across the state.
