The recent eDNA findings in waters near Lake Michigan, have prompted the MI DNR to take action. Last week, Michigan DNR Director Dan Eichinger confirmed the commitment of $8 million in state funds to protect the Great Lakes from the threat of Asian carp. The funds were appropriated for a non-federal match for a series of measures at the Brandon Road Lock and Dam, a critical pinch point for keeping Asian carp out of the Great Lakes. The Brandon Road project, with congressional approval, would install additional technologies, including an electrical barrier, underwater sound, an air bubble curtain and a flushing lock. “Stopping invasive carp from entering into the Great Lakes is a top priority on MBIA's initiatives," said MBIA Executive Director Nicki Polan. "We met earlier this year with Director Eichinger to discuss this and other issues, and we applaud his efforts and Michigan's support for recognizing the importance of protecting our Great Lakes and our fisheries."
