Michigan Boating Industries Association(MBIA) leaders were in Lansing on September 4 for the Michigan Waterways Caucus meeting and an opportunity to educate legislators on the importance of the boating industry to Michigan. Michigan Department of Natural Resources Director Dan Eichinger joined the group and spoke on critical issues of water levels, waterway access, and waterway conservation. MBIA’s Nicki Polan reviewed past legislative successes such as Abandoned Boat Legislation, Sales Tax on the Difference and $21 million in emergency dredging Funds. Current issues reviewed included: protecting boating access and the importance of the Michigan Waterways Fund, protecting consumers from misfuelling at the pump as E15 becomes more prevalent, the importance of Post Labor Day School Start, and Daylight Savings Time to outdoor industries, our industries opposition to the placement of wind turbines in our Great Lakes. “We were also very pleased to have had the opportunity to share our successes in developing marine education programs around the state to fill the skills gap and bring more employees to our industry,” said MBIA Executive Director Nicki Polan. “We also identified our support for the initiatives outlined in the Great Lakes Presidential Agenda, which included stopping Asian Carp, reducing nutrient pollution in Lake Erie, supporting the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, and addressing PFAS.” MBIA Chair Patti Smith, who also sits on the Governor’s Advisory Board for Outdoor Recreation also attended as did Director Jim Coburn. “It was a great meeting,” said Smith. “The Representatives and Senators in attendance were very engaged and interested in supporting our boating industry in Michigan.”
