In-Transit Repair Plates

Several MBIA members in Oakland County have been repeatedly ticketed by White Lake Township Police and Oakland County Sheriffs for incorrect use of InTransit Plates.  MBIA has researched the statute language which states clearly how these plates may be used and based on the statute language, these tickets have not been warranted.  The discrepancy comes from the language found on the Michigan Secretary of State’s website. MBIA is currently working with our Lansing connections to correct this language on the SOS website.  MBIA will also formulate a letter to the White Lake Police and Oakland County Sheriff offices. If you have similar problems in your area, please let us know.   MICHIGAN VEHICLE CODE (EXCERPT) Act 300 of 1949 section (11) explains how an in-transit repair plate may be used, “:… or to persons defined as watercraft dealers under part 801 of the natural resources and environmental protection act, 1994 PA 451, MCL 324.80101 to 324.80199, or to the owner of a marina for the purpose of delivering a vessel or trailer to a purchaser, to transport a vessel between a body of water and a place of storage, to transport a vessel or trailer to and from a boat show or exposition, to repair, service, or store a vessel or trailer, or to return a vessel or trailer to the customer after repair, service, or storage. A registration plate issued under this subsection shall be used to move the vehicle or trailer.” In this language the registration plate is referencing the in-transit repair plate.  For a full copy of this document click here.
