Clean Marina History - Walstrom Marine

Tuesday, January 9, 2018   (0 Comments)

"Walstrom Marine was one of the first to become a certified Clean Marina in Michigan in 2005.  Our reason was that because we operate in one of the cleanest harbors in Michigan we wanted to keep it clean.  You can walk down any of our docks and see the bottom which is one of our assets that appeals to our customers. We had been doing some things already such as installing a stormwater collection tank and using baking soda to clean bottoms so we had a jump start.  But we knew we could improve. So we assigned a team of employees responsible for each of the categories of the Clean Marina Program. Each month we met to discuss specific areas to be addressed.  One improvement was purchase of a hot water bottom washer.  Another was use of biodegradable materials in cleaning.  Another was to install recycle centers for our service and customers.  We moved our used oil containment to a site off the water.  At first, our employees were reluctant but when they could see the benefits such as improved safety, cleaner working conditions, attractive buildings and grounds, more customers for service work, and better community image, they came on board.  Our Emergency Plan is attached inside every door of every building.  Another approach to help our employees transition was hiring a facilities manager dedicated to keeping our yard clean. It showed the level of management’s dedication to the program.  In our weekly service meetings, we solicited input on clean improvements. As a result we developed a manual with photos which we shared with other marinas.  As a result of the Clean Marina Program, we have a feeling of satisfaction that we are better stewards of our natural resources. I also became involved in a Great Lakes Green Team to develop Best Management Practices that all States have in common." -- Ward Walstrom
