The Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Michigan State Waterways Commission and Michigan Boating Industries Association invites residents and visitors to experience the abundance of freshwater resources the state has to offer during Michigan Boating Week June 4-11. The week-long campaign encourages residents and visitors to experience the varied boating opportunities that Michigan has to offer and concludes on National Marina Day.

“Michigan Boating Week is an opportunity to highlight the importance of the boating industry to our state’s economy as well as its importance to the quality of life for nearly four million recreational boaters," said Nicki Polan, executive director for the Michigan Boating Industries Association. “Michigan's freshwater resources help build lakeside communities and boating industries such as tourism, commercial fishing, boat manufacturing and related industries.”

Michigan is a boater's paradise. It is home to an estimated four million boating enthusiasts, including one million registered boats and 300,000 non-registered canoes and kayaks. With more than 3,288 miles of Great Lakes shoreline, 11,037 inland lakes and 36,350 miles of rivers and streams, recreational boaters are never farther than six miles from a lake or stream. Access to 154 species of fish enhances the incredible range of freshwater boating experiences. In addition, recreational boating has an annual $7.4 billion impact and the boating industry provides 58,863 jobs across the state.
