This week in Lansing

Tuesday, April 10, 2018   (0 Comments)

As election season looms ever closer, both House and Senate members continue to prepare for a large overhaul in their respective chambers. In the House, only 23 members are in their third and final term, while 20 others are forgoing additional terms to run for open Senate seats. As reported by a Lansing news source, at least 44 seats in the House will see a new face representing them, which means a 40 percent turnover overall. In the Senate, only 11 members will remain and run for re-election, meaning 27 new members will be selected to represent their respective districts. As for which party has an advantage, it appears that 2018 will be more competitive in statewide and legislative races; Republicans are in the majority currently in both chambers and at the executive level while Democrats remain optimistic about capitalizing on national momentum with hopes of closing the gap and/or flipping a Chamber and the Governor’s seat this election cycle. MBIA’s lobbying team will be busy educating new legislators as to the importance of our industry to the state’s economy and its citizens. And will also educate them on the importance of laws such as Sales Tax on the Difference to our industries survival and jobs.
