MBIA helping partners with Issue related to 2017 National Electric Code’s Marine & Boatyard section

Tuesday, August 22, 2017   (0 Comments)
The 2017 NEC issue pertains to a section that says marinas (boatyards, etc.) must have a 30mA ground protection supplying the marina, in other words very low and likely to cause supply disruptions. Along with that the NFPA panel misinterpreted an ABYC recommendation which recommended a 100mA protection. At the time, industry input into the code making was inadequate, so the issue was not caught and the 2017 NEC was approved. There have been some issues, i.e. projects on hold, reported in the Northwest. No one wants to update their system to a code that will impact the success of their business.   For the 2020 code re-write there will be a greater effort to get the industry voice heard.  The initial public comment submission deadline is Sept. 7th, 2017 for any trade associations looking to comment. After that it is a two year process with various comment periods.  We are now helping to provide situations around the country, like projects on hold, to illustrate the current codes impacts.  Please let us know by sending your example to npolan@mbia.org or call Nicki Polan at 734.261.0123, ext. 4.
