MBIA recently asked members to contact their State Reps to vote against HB 5193! because...HB 5193 will expedite the defacto repeal of Michigan law requiring schools to open after Labor Day. This will do great harm to Michigan's boating industry and your business. It will also hurt tourism - our state's third largest industry! Entire communities will suffer. Michigan's boating industry brings an annual $7.4 billion economic impact to our state, tourism more than $19 billion. We can’t allow HB 5193 to jeopardize our industries and the 275,000 jobs they provide our citizens.
• Additionally, HB 5193 governs against the will of Michigan voters. In an August 2015 poll, 72% of Michigan voters support Post Labor Day Schools (PLDS). That same poll found landslide voter support for PLDS with 64% of voters supporting the law, even when Labor Day falls as late as September 7th. Also, the poll found that Michigan voters prefer to vacation in the month of August over July by seven points!
• Post Labor Day School Opening Works - we must keep it! July and August are the top two highest revenue producing months of the year for tourism. Within two years of passage of Michigan law requiring schools to open after Labor Day, August supplanted July as the highest month for tourism revenues. The holiday weekend is a popular boating weekend - we cannot afford to shorten our already short boating season. This is a huge issue to both the boating and tourism industry that generate in excess of $7.4 billion and $19.5 billion respectively each year for Michigan' economy, and which employ more than 275,000 people. We cannot sit by and watch this happen. Please CLICK HERE to find contact information for your Representative! Please follow up your email with a phone call - urge them to vote against HB 5193!
