Legislative Alert - Help Stop Federal Boat Permitting
Senators Levin and Stabenow signed on as sponsors to stop the threat to Recreational Boating. The industry continues to work to get sponsors from other states. Unless Congress acts soon, every recreational boater in the country will have to obtain a federal or state permit in order to operate their boat. This means yearly fees, bureaucratic red tape, confusing and potentially state-by-state regulations, citizen suits and $32,000 per day penalties for non-compliance. Thank you to those who took the time to contact your U.S. Sentators. Click here for more information.

Nexus Card Expedites Process for Boaters Travelling to and from CanadaThe U.S. Customs and Border Protection booth was well attended at the 2008 Detroit Boat Show, where boaters often waited for their turn to ask specific questions. Typically, boaters in southeast Michigan were most interested in what they need to do in order to properly cross the U.S. – Canada border legally and quickly. Customs are Border Protection officers at the Detroit Boat Show were on hand to answer any and all questions about border crossings and to distribute literature about their policies and programs, including the new online application process now available for the NEXUS card. Once approved, boaters will have access to telephonic marine reporting that allows expedited processing. The online application system expedites the entire application and vetting process, and streamlines the processing time for new applicants and renewals. The Nexus card has also been proposed as an accepted alternative to a passport under new travel document requirements, slated to go into effect for land and sea crossings in 2009.
